2007 Nobel in Economics: Designing Better Markets

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report.

Many things perform effectively but not efficiently. To be efficient means to produce a desired effect with as little waste as possible.

How can markets be designed to make them more efficient? This is a question that the three winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in economics have tried to answer. They established mechanism design theory.

Leonid Hurwicz
Leonid Hurwicz

It began with work by Leonid Hurwicz of the University of Minnesota in nineteen sixty. Eric Maskin of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and Roger Myerson of the University of Chicago further developed it.

The three Americans will share the award worth about one and a half million dollars. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the winners this week.

In everyday life, there are many things that get in the way of efficient markets. There may not be true competition. Buyers and sellers may keep some information private from each other. Also, the production and use of goods may result in outcomes like pollution or social costs.

Mechanism design theory permits economists to identify situations where markets work well and where they do not. For example, it shows why an auction is generally the most efficient way to sell many kinds of goods.

In fact, experts say the theory explains why a version called a double auction is often the best way to trade. In a double auction, buyers and sellers both make price bids.

The Swedish academy says the theory also explains why there is often no good market solution to providing some goods, like uncrowded roads.

Mechanism design theory is part of the wider economic idea of game theory and it has many uses — including in political science.

Roger Myerson even built a mathematical model for elections. He found a voting system that he says would have helped Florida avoid its problems in the two thousand presidential election.

The Nobel Prize award ceremonies will take place on December tenth. The official name of the economics award is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. The Swedish central bank created the prize in nineteen sixty-eight.

Leo Hurwicz was born in Russia in nineteen seventeen. He developed new ways to understand markets. He began his work after World War Two. At ninety years old, he is the oldest person ever to win a Nobel Prize.

Raindrops…
It’s like a smile

It’s ambiguous

Maybe that’s why people love raindrops

Raindrops…
It represents many feels
Just like a smile that worrg thousand words
or a “blue” that means everything

Ones who are happy call it “romantic”
Ones who are sad call it “teardrops from the sky”

Croatian Open Competition in Informatics

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Yesterday, the 1st contest of COCI 2007/2008 was held. It was from 9 to 12PM WIB (GMT+7). There were 6 tasks for contestants to solve in 3 hours. The environment system used in this contest is the same as the IOI 2007 system.

You can click here to open the main gate of COCI 2007/2008.

You can click here to open the contest system.

You can click here to read the 1st contest’s tasks.

The solution, usually the committee will publish it officially in a few days after the contest, but I will try to publish mine here. So far, I’ve only full-scored 4 tasks (the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th) and partial-scored the 6th task (did brute force).

For the OSN 2007 medalists, if you didn’t have enough time yesterday to compete, you can try the analysis mode. And if you really want to practice, try not to do “trial n error” way, try to fully solve and code the tasks in 3 hours without any help and then submit all your source code and see the score you can get. After you get your score, you can post your mark here as a comment. I will make a short list of OSN 2007 medalists’ rank in 1st contest of COCI 2007/2008. Enjoy this event as a warm-up for the 1st TOKI 2008 National Training which will be held on 12 November - 2 December 2007.

Angkot Drivers, They’re Good at Algorithms

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Angkot = Angkutan Kota = City Transportation (Eng.)

This is from my experience, using Indonesian angkot for many years…

Actually, angkot drivers are good at algorithms, you can see it everytime in their behaviour.

On the road, when it’s getting crowded, they usually use “greedy algorithm” to make their car go forward, tough maybe finally that way will spend much more time.

About the seat, angkot drivers usually use “knapsack algorithm” to maximize the number of person to go with.

The last one, do you realize, in some case angkot drivers used to take another way to go, they actually use “network flow algorithm” to get their destination faster, hehe…

Cibunut Jazz Night

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Full-moon, some romantic-light, and rhythm of jazz. What else you can hope for weekend? It’s almost perfect…

Yeah it was the Cibunut Jazz Night, I was there with my friends, Kevin Tanadi and Nessia Fausta, sadly I had to leave before the event ended.

Studio Generale : To Be A Scientist

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Such a great class. There were Prof. Gede Rake and Prof. Syamsul who gave a great speech about to be a scientist.

“To be a scientist is about contributing something to society”
“Love what you do and do what you love”
“To be a good scientist, you have to do it with passion. It’s not only about profession”
“More questioning is smarter than more answering”

An event like this make me more “not disappointed” to choose FMIPA as my “terminal place”.

Internet Speed

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

I have test my SPEEDY internet connection using SpeedTest.Net, I’m not really sure weather it’s really correct or not, but that’s the result shows that my download speed is at 310 Kbps and upload at 26 Kbps It’s fast enough I think for Indonesian connection. The only thing you may confuse about internet connection is that upload always slower than download, why? Because most high-speed internet connections, including cable modems and DSL are asymmetric, they are designed to provide much better speed for downloadin than uploading. Since most users spend much more time downloading than uploading, high speed internet providers have designed their systems to give priority to downloading.

One of the greatest online marketing tools is a perfect example of how to both test your website hosting speed and how to make a functional tool and market your domain names site at once. This beats pay per click campaigns hands down, because people will return time and again thanks to multimedia web design and a great tool backend.

Hancur hatiku mengenang dikau
Menjadi keping-keping setelah kau pergi
Tinggalkan kasih sayang
Yang pernah singgah antara kita

Masihkah ada sayang itu
Memang salahku, yang tak pernah bisa
Meninggalkan dirinya ‘tuk bersama kamu
Walau ‘tuk trus bersama
Kan ada hati yang ‘kan terluka
Dan ku tahu kau tak mau

Sekali lagi maafkanlah
Karena ku cinta kau dan dia
Maafkanlah ku tak bisa tinggalkan dirinya

Mungkin tak mungkin ‘tuk terus bersama
Jalani semua cinta yang tlah dijalani
Tapi bila itu yang
Kau pikir yang terbaik untukmu
Bahagiaku untuk dirimu

Simpan sisa sisa cerita cinta berdua
Walau tak tersisa cerita cinta berdua
Still love her in my mind
Still love her forever

[Ahmad Dhani - Aku Cinta Kau dan Dia (English : I Love You and Her)]

Long Distance Relationship

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

(taken from http://www.dearcupid.org/)

There are so many views on them. Some people think they can’t work, that the relationships aren’t “real” because you don’t see your boyfriend or girlfriend everyday, but that’s their opinion. They haven’t been in one most likely, so who’s really to judge? People that have been in them. And I know they’ll say they’re successful. There are people with internet love success stories all over the place thanks to the websites. Communication is making everything more easy for people in long distance relationships. There’s IM, email, online games, phones, texting, you name it. Without those the relationship wouldn’t be able to keep up.

I know they work because I’m in a long distance relationship currently. I didn’t meet my boyfriend on the internet or an online game of any sort. I met him in real life. He’s the most wonderful boy I have ever met. He’s two years older than me and lives on the opposite side of the country. I couldn’t be more in love with him. He listens to what I say, is there for me when I need someone, and has never been mean to me. It sounds like such a perfect little relationship doesn’t it?
